Words of Advice from Carson Kressley

The day after I posted about being overwhelmed by my closet I went to the Orangewood Scholarship Luncheon in Orange County where Carson Kressley was the keynote speaker. If you aren't familiar with Carson, he is a fashion & style guru and was on the show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He was hilarious and spot on and his speech was so funny. I could not stop laughing!

He talked about putting the best "you" forward everyday and gave his top ten pieces of advice for women.  I really wish it would have been appropriate to whip a notebook out at the table and take notes on his speech. It was THAT good.

Anyways, as soon as he started talking about clothing I started laughing because this was exactly what I needed to hear. He said that women so often keep clothing in their closets that does not fit anymore, that they dislike, that never fit properly, that's not really their style, that's worn out, etc. because they either feel guilty getting rid of it or are saving it "just in case." Yet, these are the items you need to get rid of - the clothing pieces that that you no longer like, don't make you happy, and don't make you feel good in them.

The point he made that really drove home the message for me was this: Everyday when you wake-up, you start with a blank slate. After showering, you head to your closet and get dressed for the day. You have two choices. You can either be faced with clothes you love, that fit you well, make you happy and start your day off on a positive note. Or you can be faced with clothing that is too small, doesn't fit right, or isn't your style anymore and feel bad about yourself. Why start the day off negative?

Carson talked about how it is so much better to clear all the junk out of your closet that way you know every morning when you get dressed that you will be greeted with a closet full of pieces you love, that you look great in, and make you feel good to boot!

His speech really gave me a good perspective on my clothing problems. I went through my closet and got rid of another bag of clothing! I am at three total now. Funny thing is, my closet is still packed. I probably should get rid of three more bags, but baby steps people!!!

I am still doing good with my June challenge of not buying any new clothing. I want to see how long I can keep this up for. I want to really start wearing everything in my closet and get a good feel for staples I need and pieces I have too many of.  I have a few bright colored skirts on my wish list to wear to work for the rest of the summer, but I am at least waiting until June is over to start looking for the perfect one. This no new clothing challenge is making me really evaluate my style and I have been much more creative with getting dressed everyday. I have also been trying to "style" my outfits more. There are so many great personal style and fashion blogs on the internet and these ladies are my real life fashion inspiration. Them and Lucky Magazine :)

Carson and I before the event started! What do you wear to meet a fashion maven/stylist, yet is also appropriate for a ladies charity luncheon where you need to head back to work after? After staring at my closet for 20 minutes, I chose a cute grey summery strapless dress, that I paired with a coral cardigan and a cute coral sequined flower in my hair behind my ear.
